We all want the best for our children. Especially when it comes to their education. There are many different educational methods. Probably the most popular method is the Montessori method. Originating in Italy, this approach to education focuses on respecting every child’s individuality and providing them with the keys they need to learn in a supportive and nurturing environment. As a Montessorian I am a firm believer that Montessori way of care and education is the best method for educating our children. In this guide, I’ll explore the Montessori method in greater detail and help you decide whether it might be the right fit for your child.
So What Is the Montessori Method?
Maria Montessori developed the Montessori education method in the early 20th century. Dr Montessori was a physician and educator who created the approach based on her observations of children’s behaviour and learning patterns. At its core, the Montessori method emphasises the importance of children learning at their own pace and in their own way. It is a hands-on, experiential approach to learning that seeks to foster children’s independence and natural curiosity.
How Does It Differ From Traditional Education?
In the Montessori method, there is much less focus on strict rules and schedules. Instead, children are free to explore their interests and abilities in a structured environment that encourages them to learn at their own pace. There is also a focus on the whole child.
What Can Parents Expect From a Montessori Method?
Montessori environments are typically designed to allow children to work independently and collaboratively. The setting is usually divided into different areas of learning stations, each with a specific focus. For example, there might be areas for practical life skills, sensorial activities, language, maths, and science.
The practitioner acts more as a guide than a strict authority figure, offering support and encouragement to help children reach their full potential.
Is the Montessori Method Right for Your Child?
The best way to determine if Montessori education is a good fit is to visit a local Montessori nursery and observe the activities. It would be best to talk to the practitioners, other parents, and anyone with experience with the Montessori method. Ultimately, what matters most is finding an educational approach that helps your child thrive.
The Montessori method is a unique and effective approach to education that can offer many benefits to children. By emphasising individual learning, exploratory play, and the importance of social and emotional development, this approach can help children to improve their critical thinking skills, independence, and a lifelong love of learning. If you’re considering Montessori education for your child, do your research, ask questions, and explore your options thoroughly. With the right approach, you can help your child reach their full potential and lay the foundation for success in their life.
“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.” ––Maria Montessori

As a mentor and coach it is my obligation to make sure I do everything I can to create this mindset in my practitioners.’ Once this belief is internalised, that person can find meaning in even the most mundane tasks.” – Dilia Bas
